Statement from 2nd Lt Edwin G. Goss:
"I was flying Blue 4 directly behind Red flight. Lt Gray flew Red 2. His flight bombed and started strafing target area before Blue flight. As Blue flight completed its second pass, I was just pulling off of the target in a turn to the left when I noticed two large smoke clouds rising off my left wing in the target area. During this time, Red flight was making a pass at the target. I did not think of it as a plane crashing. Flak was very heavy over target. The Germans were throwing all kinds of stuff at us. Blue flight then went down for its third pass and high tension wires that were previously noted were down. This might be accounted for by Lt Eugene F. Gray’s plane crashing into them; either after he had been hit by flak, which was very heavy, or before, thus causing his crash. Due to weather conditions, Lt Gray’s absence was not noted until the squadron reformed after completion of mission."

2nd Lt Eugene F. Gray was first buried at the Temporary American Military Cemetery of Limey, France.
