Malcolm Erickson graduated from Central High School and studied at the University of Minnesota.

He joined the U.S. Army Reserve with the aim of becoming an aviator, on 14 August 1942,

He made it into flight training and was trained at several air fields. On 10 June 1943, he crash-landed his PT19 at Brown Field, Texas. He was able to continue his flight training however,

He had completed over 80 missions.

He was awarded the Purple Heart Medal a first time for wounds, suffered in a flight on 10 January 1945 over France.
