More information

Statement from Donovan E. Enos, 1st Lt Air Corps:
“I was flying white four on Lt Robert Hartmann's wing on an armed recce in the vicinity of Witten on the afternoon of 11 April 1945. The Flight Leader, Maj Stout, called the flight and said we would go down and strafe. When I started my initial strafing pass, I found my guns would not fire, so I pulled out of the pattern. After approximately five minutes, I located the difficulty and called and said I would re-enter the pattern. I didn't notice how many ships were strafing in that vicinity, as there was a great deal of smoke from the burning vehicles. I made about three passes when about halfway around the pattern I looked down and saw what appeared to be an airplane that had crashed. It was burning, and only the tail assembly was recognizable. This was in the vicinity of Witten (coordinate Ra-6914). I would say that it happened during the time I was out of the strafing pattern. The flak was light, with considerable small arms fire. The terrain was moderately hilly. The exact cause of his crash I was unable to determine.”
The plane crashed near the Ruhr River.
