More information
2nd Lt Harold E. Flaugh enlisted in Madison County, Iowa on 7 February 1941. He transferred to the Army Air Forces in October 1942.Statement from Lloyd W. Bladow, US DAC, Investigator: "This case refers to Harold E. Flaugh, a member of the crew of aircraft 42-72865. Plane was last seen near Wesel, Germany and believed to have crashed at Bokhoven, Holland. A thorough search at Bokhoven and vicinity was made with negative findings. The plane itself could not be found. Bokhoven is in the community of Engelen where the town hall is located. Their information consisted of only one plane having crashed in that community during the war. The plane and its two casualties have been identified as RAF by the British Grave Service. Remaining military men buried in that community are 4 Germans. They having been killed on 28 Oct 1944.
Harold's plane was hit by flak and knocked down by fighters. All crew members bailed out. Harold bailed out from the bomb bay somewhere in the vicinity of Dusseldorf, Germany. He was last seen as he left the ship, falling through space. Germans told one of the crew members that a parachute was seen dropping into the Rhine river. The other crew members were taken POW.
