Jacob Augenstene graduated from Pennsylvania State College with the class of 1939. He worked in the real estate department of the Union National Bank.He joined the Air Corps of the Regular Army in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on 8 October 1941.
The airplane was attacked by enemy aircraft in the vicinity of Villers-Ecalles, France. As a result of this attack, their plane burst into flames.
Eight crew members were killed, three men survived and were taken prisoner.
