More information

T/Sgt Gerald D. Mason, 17034081, member of crew of A/C #878, reports: "The B-24D 232, piloted by Lt O'Neill, swung over behind us, slightly to the right, and about 5:30 high. They dropped their bombs on the swing. This was just over the target at about 1225 hours, altitude 21,000 feet. The A/C appeared to be hit by flak or bombs from the A/C in the formation above. The right wing came off at #4 engine. The ship went into a spin, caught on fire, and crashed. No parachutes were seen."

1st Lt Keith Cookus, O-675040 says: "At the target, A/C #232 was hit by bombs from a B-24 above. The right wing tip was knocked off and the A/C burst into flames. The tail was also knocked off. A/C spiraled down, flaming. No parachutes were seen."

1st Lt Samuel D. Williams, O-524481, relates: "Over the target, at about 1225 hours, the B-24D A/C #232 was hit by flak which knocked the right wing off at the inboard engine. Two parachutes were seen to open. The A/C went into a flat spin and burst into flames.

The crew members were initially buried at the cemetery in Wittmund.
