Pfc Leonard F. Bissa graduated from Thornton Fractional Township High School with the class of 1937. During his academic career, he starred on the football and wrestling teams. His wrestling nickname was "the human butcher" and his efforts on the football field were described "as tough a ball player as can be found anywhere without exaggeration."

He worked at the Pressed Steel Car Company.

He was initially buried at the Temporary American Military Cemetery of Foy, Belgium.
