Pvt Gene B. Rhodes graduated from the local high school in 1941 and studied mechanical engineering at the University of Cincinnati.

He joined the U.S. Army Reserve in Cincinnati, Ohio on 11 November 1942. He trained at Fort Eustis, Virginia, Fort Benning, Georgia, Camp Mackall, North Carolina, and Camp Forrest, Tennessee and was sent overseas in August 1944.

Pvt Rhodes was slightly wounded during the advance into Cologne. He was sent to a rest camp in France and rejoined his unit after his recovery.
