Henry Dehnert attended Columbia University, when he entered the service. He was a noted athlete over his two years at Columbia. He was a Varsity basketball player, a position which he came to rightfully as the son of a famous professional (Celtics) basketball player, "Dutch Dehnert." He also played third base with the Freshman baseball team. On 29 May 1944, after the end of his sophomore year at Columbia, he enlisted at Camp Upton, New York
