Statement of 2nd Lt Russell H. Oplinger Jr. who flew in the same mission: "I was flying Lt Gallagher's wing as we dove on a strafing target. He was momentarily blacked out by my wing, and when I turned back, I saw an explosion and burning debris skidding across the ground. This occurred about 1620 hours on 19 November 1944, approximately 3 miles northwest of Düren, Germany."Statement of F/O Sanford A. Ross, who flew in the same mission: "I was flying Relic Yellow two on Mission Y21-3 on 19 November 1944. I saw Red flight go down on their strafing attack on a column of vehicles on a road. I saw an explosion and a large sheet of flame which slid across the road and into the field beyond. I believe the plane to be that of Lt Gallagher, who was flying Relic Red No. 3. This happened at approximately 1610 hours, about 3 miles northwest of Düren."
