Claude A. Halterman attended college,He volunteered for the Air Corps of the Army of the United States in Los Angeles, California, on 15 October 1942.
Lt Claude Halterman was shot down twice in the European theater. On 4 September 1944, he belly-landed in the vicinity of Soissons, France. He called over R/T after landing and said he was OK. With the help of the French resistance, he could make it to friendly territory.
Statement of 1st Lt Marvin W. Miller, who was flying the same mission: "I was flying Relic Yellow four on a mission near Grevenbroich, Germany at about 1200 hours. I saw my element leader, Lt Halterman, get hit in the right wing root with flak. It started burning immediately. He shouted, 'I'm bailing out.' The plane immediately went into a spin. I saw the canopy jettisoned, but I did not see Lt Halterman leave the plane, nor did I see a chute open. The plane crashed and exploded at approximately 2 ½ miles northeast of Grevenbroich."
