Lt Dayton graduated from Bruce high School in 1940 and from Potomac State School in 1942.He was married to Helen Parker on 16 November 1943.
He graduated as a pilot from the Army Air Forces advanced Flying school at Yuma, Arizona in October 1943.
B-17 #42-31698 was crippled by enemy fire during the first fighter attack. The right wing broke off and as it went down, collided with B-17 #42-97214. Both airplane exploded.
The entire crew of this B-17 was killed and was initially buried at the cemetery of Tempelfelde, Germany.
