Lt Haushalter attended St. Louis University before he volunteered for the Air Corps of the Army of the United States.He was promoted to first lieutenant the day before he was reported missing.
The airplane was attacked by fighters during the bomb run, setting it on fire. It left formation and the most of the crew bailed out before it crashed.
Five crew members survived and were taken prisoner, five were killed.
Lt Haushalter was killed due to parachute failure and his body was found in the Horst-Wessel Street at Zernsdorf, this was about 4 miles of the crashsite.
