More information

Henry Artykewicz attended college before he volunteered for the Air Corps of the Army of the United States in Newark, New Jersey on 26 June 1942.

Right after the group left the target area, the airplane was attacked by enemy fighters and went down in a steep dive.

According to a surviving crew member, the Germans told him Lt Artykewicz was killed by gunfire. His body was found in the wreckage.

Lt Artykewicz had replaced another co-pilot and this was his first mission.

In addition of the crew of ten men, also the group photographer was on board. Four crew members survived and were taken prisoner. Seven men were killed.

Based on available sources, it is not completely clear where the plane crashed and the deceased crew members were found. The MACR mentions the place Steinmanger or Steinamnanger in Austria. However, this is the German name for Szombathely in Hungary, which is located a few kilometers across the border. More likely Steinberg-Dörfl is meant here. Furthermore, one of the surviving crew members indicated that the deceased men were initially buried in Wiesmuth, Austria. Wiesmath is undoubtedly meant here.
