He volunteered for the Air Corps of the Army of the United States in New York City, New York on 16 January 1942.

Crew members of other planes in the group saw this airplane peel to the right just after the bomb run. #2 engine was on fire and #3 and #4 engines were smoking badly.

Sgt Thorpe was first buried at the Temporary American Military Cemetery of St. Avold, France.
