More information

Fred Scherer attended college.

He volunteered for the Air Corps of the Army of the United States in Portland, Oregon, on 14 September 1942.

Statement of 2nd Lt Oscar G. Olson, who flew in the same mission: "On the 25th of February 1945 our flight was attacked by enemy aircraft about one mile northwest of Siegburg, Germany. I saw Lt. Scherer pull up high to the right, his plane was smoking. He then rolled over on his back and was heading straight down, the last I saw of him. There were two FW-190s on my tail at this time, which fact allowed me no further opportunity to learn more concerning Lt Scherer's fate."

Statement of 2nd Lt William W. Shisler, who flew in the same mission: "On the 25th of February 1945, during the attack of our flight by Me-109s and FW 190s in the Siegburg, Germany area, I saw a P-47 north of me at about an altitude of 1,500 feet going straight down. I was not certain whether or not it was Lt Scherer's plane."
