More information
Frank Sonsini attended Newton North High School with the class of 1941 and was employed at the Trans-Lux Theatre. He joined the Air Corps of the U.S. Army Reserve in Boston, Massachusetts.
Statement of 1st Lt Joseph E. Ferrar, who flew in the same mission: "On 9th April 1945 we were over Jena, Germany, when Lt Sonsini said that he had only 70 gallons of gasoline left. We started back immediately. Ten minutes later when we were over friendly territory, he said that he had only 60 gallons remaining. I called 'Sweepstakes' on 'B' channel and asked them to vector him to the nearest field. I then turned back to 'A' channel, keeping one man on 'B' channel, and resumed my course."
Statement of 2nd Lt Alfred A. Springett, who flew in the same mission: "I was listening to "Sweepstakes" vector Lt Sonsini on 'B' channel. When he was near the field, he was told to take a course of 280 degrees. Evidently he did not see the field, for 'Sweepstakes' had to vector him three different times. He then said that he was low on gas and would have to belly in. I then lost radio contact."
