More information
T/Sgt Robert A. Weander graduated from Central High School and was employed at the National Woodworks before he enlisted at Camp Dodge, Iowa on 15 February 1943.Capt W. M. Bryan:
Capt Novothny was flying group lead in A/C No. 989. Our position was his deputy lead. His ship was hit by flak over the target and swung off to the left with the bomb-bay doors opened. I saw four men jump from the escape hatch in the waist, one from the rear of the bomb-bay, one from the forward bomb-bay and one of the top escape hatch. I observed no chutes opening but my gunners observed three. The ship was seen to explode off to our rear.
S/Sgt Henry Smith:
He did bail out from the waist after we were hit. He was shot by a civilian.
