Robert Green joined the Air Corps of the U.S. Army Reserve as a private on 12 June 1942 and was called into service on 2 December 1942 as an aviaton cadet. After taking pre-flight training at Ellington Field, Houston, Texas, he was graduated as a bombardier at San Angelo, Texas on 24 June 1943. He then advanced training at Lowrey Field, Colorado and Moses Lake, Washington. He was sent to Drew Field, Florida in November 1943 and went overseas in January 1944, by way of Brazit and North Africa. During his bombing assignments he was stationed in England.

He attended high school for 4 years and worked in a metal factory before he joined the Army.

The plane was attacked by fighters just after bombs away, which shot off part of the vertical stabilizer. It stayed in the formation a few minutes, then dove down and crashed into the water.

One crew member survived and was taken prisoner, nine men were killed.

Lt Green was initially buried at the New Cemetery at Rostock on 17 April 1944. He was disinterred by an American investigation team between 9 and 11 April 1947 and evacuated to Ardennes.
