More information

T/Sgt Tungkvist enlisted on the Philippine Islands on 9 July 1943.

555 B-17's and 193 B-24's were dispatched to industrial areas and aviation industry plants in Berlin, Erkener and Oranienburg. The original objective of the 92nd Bomber Group, Heavy was Berlin. Deteriorating weather and dense contrails forced the formations to abort or seek targets of opportunity. Instead the docks of the Kriegsmarine in Wilhelmshaven were attacked.

The aircraft was last sighted in the vicinity of Hamburg, Germany. No one saw the A/C leave the formation and it likely crashed into the North Sea. All the other crewmembers are still missing in action and are commemorated on the Walls of the Missing at Cambridge American Cemetery in England. T/Sgt Tungkvist's body washed ashore at Bursum, Germany on 21 May 1944.

He was first buried at Temporary American Military Cemetery Ardennes Block P, Row 11, Grave 271.
