Pvt Francis S. Roan graduated from Taunton High School and was employed as a clerk at Corcoran Supply Company.

He joined the Air Corps of the National Guard in Boston, Massachusetts on 25 November 1940. He was sent overseas in May 1943 as an armament specialist.

A contest was held at his airbase in England and his daughter, Paula Marie, was selected as prettiest baby. The prize was naming a flying Fortress after her.

On one picture Pvt Roan on right is shaking hands with Lt. William S. Holden, pilot of newly named Flying Fortress.
