Pfc Francis C. Smith lived with his parents on a farm near Garber, Iowa until their death in 1939. He attended the Colesburg en Guttenberg schools. He volunteered for service in the Army on June 27, 1941. He received his basic training at Camp Polk, La., and then was transferred to Rice, Calif., for desert training. From there he was moved to Camp Pickett, Va., for a short time and was then stationed at Indiantown Gap, Pa., from where he had his last furlough in July of 1943.
