Pfc William S. Goodwyn III graduated from Central High School and attended Southwestern College for two years.

He enlisted in Memphis, Tennessee on 26 October 1942. He was selected for A.S.T.P. and studied at North Carolina State College until the program was disbanded. He was sent overseas in October 1944.

He was first buried at the temporary American cemetery of Margraten, the Netherlands at Block QQQ, Row 2, Grave 33
