Pvt Charlie Evans enlisted at Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia on 17 October 1942.

He had been wounded twice, having previously received the Purple Heart for injuries suffered in France. Pvt Evans received basic training at Camp Butner, North Carolina and had been overseas 10 months. He was married to Ruby C. Baird on 14 February 1942 in Campbell, Tennessee.
