Following statement made by 2nd Lt William H. Craighead, O-682008:"The formation was attacked by between thirty and forty fighters including ME 109s and FW 190s. Aircraft 42-39933 blow up into a sheet of flame."
T/Sgt Koon fractured his spine, the lower part of his body was paralyzed, and he died of wounds on 15 July 1944 at 0100 in the hospital of Oldenburg, Germany. He was buried in the New Cemetery in Oldenburg, Germany.
