T/Sgt Vernon F. Cummings worked in a paint factory. He enlisted in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on 3 November 1942.

According to crew members of other airplanes, the plane exploded in mid-air.

According to S/Sgt Soltau, who survived the crash, S/Sgt Sliff was knocked unconscious by ammo-cans from the upper turret and he was caught in the explosion.

The killed crew members were initially buried at the Jewish Cemetery of Hoya on 10 May 1944.

T/Sgt Vernon F. Cummings is remembered with a memorial marker at Emery Cemetery in Dover, Price County, Wisconsin.
