More information

S/Sgt Norbert J. Ziegler was a clerk before he joined the U.S. Army Reserve at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, on 19 November 1942.

Aircraft #41-28944 went into a large cloud bank at 24,000 feet. Several minutes later, the aircraft flipped on its back. S/Sgt Encimer and S/Sgt Cecil L Scott, 39910198 then parachuted to safety. All other crew members were killed when this aircraft crashed 1 Km from Petegem, Deinze, Belgium.

Later, it was discovered that the plane collided with aircraft 42-50381 over Deinze during an electrical storm. Both planes lost a wing. One plane crashed at Molenhoek (Petegem) and the other crashed at Prijkels (at the border of Petegem and Nazareth).

The remaining nine crew members were initially buried at the U.S. Army Cemetery, Flanders Field, Waregem, Belgium. On 15 May 1945, their remains were transported to Henri-Chapelle. All but S/Sgt Ziegler later returned to the U.S.A.
