More information

Pvt George Bingham enlisted in Albany, New York on 7 October 1943.

He joined his unit from Replacement Depot on 16 October 1944.

He was taken prisoner in Bourheim, Germany on 26 November 1944. He was holding a position in this town when his company was forced to withdraw during a counterattack.

In a letter from the War Department, Mr. and Mrs. George B. Bingham, 129 River Street, Hudson Falls, have been informed that their son, Pvt George J. Bingham, was killed in action last April 7. An earlier stated that he had died March 7, in a prisoner of war camp.
The new letter states the letter is written in reference to the Presidential Accolade awarded posthumously to Private Bingham.
'A more recent report received in this office shows the cause of death to be April 1, 1945, instead of March of this year. It is regretted that these errors were made'.

According to a statement of Wenzel Prade, a POW who worked in the hospital of Wahren-Leipzig, Pvt Bingham was brought in by stretcher, already half dead. He died in the hospital from malnutrition. It was assumed that he was interred in the East Cemetery at Leipzig on 17 April 1945.

Investigation on 14 July 1948 revealed that the cemetery records indicated that he was interred there and that he was disinterred by an American Search and Recovery Team on 29 June 1945. Attempts to associate unknowns, recovered from the location were negative.
