1st Lieutenant James A. White graduated from the University of Florida. In the same exercise in which he received his BA degree, he was awarded his commission from the university ROTC as a second lieutenant in the infantry. He went into active service at once and reported to Camp Wolters, Texas. Later he served at Fort Benning, Georgia, Camp Blanding and Camp Shelby, Mississippi. Early in September 1944 he reported to Fort Meade, Maryland and soon after left for overseas duty.Lt. White was married on 20 June 1943 in Fort Worth, Texas, to Marian Lewis.
He joined his unit from Replacement Depot on 7 October 1944.
