Norman J. Fix graduated from Attica High School and worked as a mechanic.

He enlisted in Buffalo, Monroe County, New York, on 9 April 1942.

While still flying over the target, very shortly after bomb's away, Lt Harold J. Chapman's no. 42-37809 "Carolina Queen" was attacked head on by two ME-109s. The bombardier, Lt Wallis, was hit by 20 mm shells and killed instantly. The controls of the plane were shot away, and Lt Chapman ordered the crew to bail out. The plane crashed about 10 miles from Oschersleben just before noon. Five men of the crew did not survive.

His brother Kenneth also served in the European Theater of Operations.
