William Bell was a carrier for the Fresno Bee while attending the Webster and Lowell Elementary Schools. He was a graduate of the Fresno Technical High School in 1940 as president of his class. He was working as a technician in a Los Angeles chemical company.

He enlisted in September 1942 and was sent overseas in February 1943.

His parachute failed to open.
