More information

Statement from 2nd Lt Richard J. Boes, who flew in the same mission: "On October 14th I was flying Red Two. Lt Harrison was flying Red Four. We were approaching in the target area above a 10/10 overcast at 10,000 feet when the flak hit us. Lt Harrison was hit and turned for home. Red Leader assigned me to accompany him. I turned to catch up to Lt. Harrison, but he reached the top of overcast before I could catch him. As we hit the overcast, I took approximately the same course he did. When we came out of the overcast, we were at approximately 4,000 feet. Lt. Harrison was quite a distance from me. His plane was boxed in by very intense and accurate 20mm flak, and it looked like he might have been hit again. I asked him what he intended doing, and he told me he was going to bail out. At this time, approximately 1700, he was over the edge of Saarbrucken. The next I saw was the plane going in, and it exploded into flames as it hit the ground. I cannot swear I saw a parachute because of white puffs of flak surrounding the plane. I then proceeded home."
