Statement from Capt Francis P. McIntire:
"Lt Lutomski was flying as Red No.2 on an armed reconnaissance mission in the Merzig area. In this area, there was a 10/10 overcast from 2,000 to 5,000 feet. Red flight dived through the overcast at 300 MPH and continued just below the overcast at this airspeed for about two minutes until we spotted a marshalling yard. We released our bombs, two 500-lb GP and one 260-lb frag each, at the trains in the yard. Observing no flak, we did a 360-degree turn and strafed the area. On pulling up from his strafing run, Lt Lutomski received a direct hit by 20 mm flak. He called and said that he was on fire. He was instructed to bail out. He jettisoned his canopy. The aircraft was burning badly. He was again instructed to bail out, but no chute was observed. The aircraft continued in a diving turn to the right and hit the ground and exploded."
