Pfc James W. Jones enlisted in Peoria, Illinois on 16 October 1942. He was stationed at Fort Riley, Kansas for his basic training. Eventually he was transferred to the 9th Armored Division at Camp Polk, Louisiana. He sailed to England on 15 August 1943 where he could meet his brother S/Sgt Charles E.
