Pfc Fred R. Penman graduated from Upper Darby High School.

He enlisted in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on 5 November 1942.

Three brothers also served:. Charles served with the U.S. Navy, Quentin with the U.S. Marines in the Pacific and Robert with the Army Air Corps.

Sgt Robert Penman was killed in action over Czechoslovakia on 6 December 1944 and is buried at Lorraine American Cemetery.
