More information

Lt Edward E. Smith graduated from Lee Edwards High School and from North Carolina State College where he majored in aeronautical engineering. At college, he was a member of the band and the symphony orchestra.

He enlisted in Miami, Florida in February 1943. Lt Smith had long been anxious to fly and told his mother that, as a pilot, he was the "happiest he had ever been".

He was fatally injured while strafing a convoy of trucks.
