He joined the Air Corps in January 1943, and was graduated from Foster Field, Texas in November 1944.

Statement of 1st Lt Kenneth E. Placek, who flew in the same mission: "I was flying Green Leader on an eight ship close support mission on 7 April 1945. On Blue Flight's first strafing pass, the number four man in that flight was hit and headed for the town of Dingelstadt, Germany, which was held by our troops. He tried to belly land the airplane, but he had excessive speed. Before his second attempt, the rear part of his fuselage burst into flames. A moment later, he bellied in, but the plane burst into a ball of flame and disintegrated on impact. I observed two of our tanks headed toward the wreckage."
