More information

1st Lt Randall M. Pillsbury:
“Over the target, there was intense and accurate flak. When I first noticed aircraft #566, it was flying out to the left of the formation. It received a direct hit in the right wing, went into a loop and fell out into a spin. Five men were seen to bail out but I saw only four chutes open. The fifth was probably a delayed jump. When I last saw the ship, it was still in a spin.”
S/Sgt Richard L. Conkle:
“2nd Lt Webb was in the nose when we went over the target. He probably didn’t have the escape hatch open and when we went into the spin he was pinned and couldn’t get it open to bail out.”
