Pfc Arthur R. Townsend attended high school for four years before he enlisted in Buffalo, New York on 22 January 1943.Sgt Eugene T. Duggan and Pfc Arthur R. Townsend were members of a patrol sent out to determine enemy strength in the town of Gréning, France on 23 November 1944. Upon entering the town they met intense enemy opposition, and were not seen afterwards by members of their organization who entered the town on the next day. A thorough search was conducted, but no trace of the missing persons could be found. It is logical to conclude that Sgt Eugene T. Duggan and Pfc Arthur R. Townsend were killed in action in the town of Gréning, France on 23 November 1944.
He was officially declared dead one year and one day after he was reported missing in action. At that time his unit was fighting in Gréning, France.
He is also remembered at the Sunset Hill Cemetery in Lakewood, Chautauqua County, New York.
