More information

S/Sgt Cornelius W. Stinson attended high school for 4 years before he enlisted in Newark, New Jersey on 19 January 1943.
S/Sgt Edward E. Schneider:

“When I first noticed B-17 No.058 in trouble, there was a fire in number three engine. He pulled to the left of the formation, after this, and I saw one chute come out. He straightened up, and I saw another chute come out. Then he crossed under to the right of the formation, and a third chute came out. Shortly afterward, the plane exploded and I saw it going down in three pieces.”
According to other witnesses, the airplane was hit by a rocket.
S/Sgt Marshall W. Feltner:

"I saw S/Sgt Stinson on the ground after bailing out surrounded by fifteen to twenty Hungarian civilians armed with clubs and pitchforks. He was seriously wounded and died in a hospital near Gyor.”
