More information

Sgt Joe H. Marlowe was a sophomore at Wolford College when he enlisted at Camp Croft, South Carolina on 9 November 1942.

Aircraft 658 was hit by flak over the target at bombs away. Gas was observed leaking from the right wing. The aircraft stayed with the formation until the Durmmer Lake Area, where it was lost from view. It was still under control when last observed. At 1414, the aircraft called a DF station by WT (wireless telegraphy) asking for QDM (magnetic bearing to the station). This was given as 265 to the aircraft. At 1421, the aircraft called again, saying it had 2 engines out and that a third was going and the crew was bailing out. Sgt Marlowe was killed when his chute failed to open. He was first buried in the town of Staphorst, Holland.
