2nd Lt Herbert C. Shute was an electrician for the Bell Telephone Company.

He joined the Air Corps of the Regular Army at Fort McArthur, San Pedro, California on 23 August 1941. He spent a year in Alaska in an Air Corps supply division before his assignment to pilot training. He was commissioned a second lieutenant after completion of his training at Pecos, Texas Army Air field. Lt Shute was sent overseas in January, 1945.

The plane took part in Operation 'Revival': the repatriation of POW's out of Russian occupied zones. The exact facts of the crash aren't known.
