Sgt James D. Butler enlisted at Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia on 6 December 1942. He received his training in Fort Oglethorpe, Camp Polk, Louisiana and Fort Benning, Georgia.He was awarded the Silver Star Medal for his action on 15 August 1944.
