More information
2nd Lt Thomas J. Price was a pattern and model maker. He joined the Air Corps of the U.S. Army Reserve in Miami Beach, Florida, on 1 February 1943.
Statement of 2nd Lt Herschell Womack: "I was flying platform white two and on my way back to base after platform white leader had detailed platform white four, Lt Price, to go back with me. Platform leader had instructed us to get rid of our bombs at a small marshalling yard on the left of our course back. We dive-bombed the yard and pulled up to about 8,000 and started back to base. Platform white four was on my right, and I observed him turn to the left and start a dive down. I saw hits (strikes) in the area of his target, which was a car parked by a single building. He was apparently in too steep a dive with too much airspeed to pull out. I saw him hit to the left and a little beyond his target in a plowed field, skip, and hit in the area of a farmhouse. Parts of the plane went into the field beyond the farmhouse. There seemed to be no fire or explosion, just dust from the field. I circled the area for about 15 minutes and noticed 20-30 people in the area of the plane."
Lt Price probably died of severe head wounds.
He was initially buried at the municipal cemetery of Wevelgem, Belgium, on 28 August 1944.
