Frederick Schoonmaker graduated from Waterloo High School with the class of 1939 and of New York State Agricultural and Technical Institute at Alfred University, where he took a rural engineering course in 1943.He enlisted on 1 February 1943 in Rochester, New York and was sent overseas in March 1944.
The aircraft was shot down by anti-aircraft fire in the #3 engine. The controls were shot out, and the aircraft went into a dive and then a flat spin.
S/Sgt Schoonmaker was brought to the Reserve Hospital 101, Olympisches Dorf at Doeberitz on 21 June 1944. He was first buried at the military cemetery Elsgrund in Doeberitz on 27 June 1944.
He is remembered at the Ridge Road Cemetery in Tyre, New York.
