T/Sgt Mario Petruzziello joined the Regular Army on 15 March 1939.

He was wounded in action during the African Campaign for which he was awarded the Purple Heart a first time.

During this campaign, he was also taken prisoner by the Germans for a week. He was held on a ship in the Harbor of Tunis and was about to be sent to Italy when he was liberated by British forces.

He was awarded the Silver Star Medal posthumously for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action on the day he was killed.

His brother, Pfc Arthur Petruzziello was killed in November 1944. He is buried at the American Military Cemetery and Memorial of Margraten. His name was misspelled as Petruzzello.

Both his parents were born in Italy.
