Sgt James B. Mannon enlisted at Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia, on 27 May 1943.

The plane was hit by flak. It is believed that they received a direct hit in the cockpit area. Nothing was said over the intercom. The plane went into an immediate spin upon their second hit.

Eight crew members were killed in action, and 2 were taken prisoner.
