S/Sgt John C. Milonas graduated from Madison High School in 1942 and worked for Hart Stores.

He volunteered for the Army of the United States in Rochester, New York on 27 November 1942.

Just before leaving for overseas, he was married to Lucille Poole.

He was reported wounded in action during the invasion of Normandy, for which he was awarded the Purple Heart a first time. According to a newspaper article he and a comrade were wounded and disarmed a German deserter, forcing him to carry his comrade to Allied lines. In the same article it is mentioned S/Sgt Milonas was awarded the Legion of Merit for this action but no records of this award can be found.
