1st Lt John T. Hodder volunteered for the Army of the United States in San Francisco, California on 19 December 1941. He attended Officers Candidate School and also trained to become a paratrooper. After a parachute jump injury, for which he was hospitalized, he was transferred to the infantry. He was sent overseas in August 1944.He joined his unit from the 83rd Replacement Battalion on 26 November 1944 and was assigned as a platoon commander a day later.
