Statement of Raymond P. Pelkington, 121558, S/Sgt., 452nd Bomb Sq (M):
"On 24 March 1945 I was flying as Tail Gunner in the lead aircraft of the fourth flight in aircraft #43-34320. We were making our second run on the target when the flak came into our flight. Aircraft #42-107674, piloted by 1st Lt. Deardorff, flying in the No. 3 position, same flight, must have been severely damaged as I observed him leave the flight. The left engine appeared to have been hit. When I saw the aircraft again, about three (3) minutes later, four (4) parachutes came out. He then went into a spin and I later saw the plane crash."
The entire crew bailed out safely but S/Sgt Garrard was decapitated by a prop.
